How is history constructed? Who decides what is preserved or forgotten? What is seen, and what is obscured? The exhibition Vanishing Act is a poetic and critical investigation of the fragility of memory and history. Taking Nicky Sparre-Ulrich’s own family narrative as its point of departure, the exhibition unfolds like the figures of a matryoshka doll: each layer of meaning splits open to reveal the next, collectively drawing connections between the very personal, intimate family story and global political questions about the significance of truth in a “post-truth” age.


When Russia invaded Ukraine nearly three years ago, it prompted Sparre-Ulrich to look more closely at her own origins and family history, particularly a specific branch of the family that lived for generations in Odessa, and whose lives intertwine with the present in many ways.
